TERANEX INTRODUCES 1RU HDTV FORMAT CONVERTER WITH A
FOCUS ON VERSATILITY AND EASE OF USE
Orlando, FL. (March 3, 2006) - Teranex, a Division of Silicon Optix and leader in providing
high performance video processing solutions to the broadcast and post-production market,
today announced they will be showing a new hardware platform at the 2006 NAB Convention in
Las Vegas. The new platform, called the Teranex 1RU, is a two channel, low profile DTV
format converter that brings a new level of ease of use to the broadcast and production market.
Packed with a large array of audio and video I/O’s this utility converter/HD frame synchronizer
was designed to ingest any feed, synchronize it, and convert it to the desired SD and/or HD
output.
The Teranex 1RU was designed in close coordination with leading broadcasters to ensure
efficient and reliable operation. True to Teranex’s renowned ease of use, the 1RU provides “at
a glance” status indication of the processing and provides access to all major functions with no
more than two button presses. The 1RU front panel consists of an array of color-coded buttons
and a color LCD screen controller which doubles as a picture monitor. The front panel is also
removable for remote operation.
Applications for the 1RU include broadcast feed centers, production trucks, network operation
centers, cable head-ends, and satellite uplink/downlink facilities. Video I/O’s include SD/HD SDI,
Component, Composite, S-Video, and DVI (up to 1080p60). The 1RU includes a wealth of
audio features – 16 channels worth with swapping and shuffling. Embedded audio is standard,
along with Analog and AES. Dolby E Decode is available as an option. On the processing side,
options for per-pixel motion adaptive noise reduction and pre/post compression processing
enable efficient integration into compressed transport environments.
This new 1RU hardware platform is based on a pair of Silicon Optix Realta HQV™ chips, the
award winning video processors from Teranex’s parent company. “The Realta HQV chip was
developed over a period of 3 years at a cost of $30 Million with the goal of bringing the power of
the Teranex platform to the mass market, “ said Jed Deame, Co-founder and General Manager
of Teranex. “This level of price/performance is unmatched anywhere in the industry, and
probably will be for some time.”
The Teranex 1RU provides performance approaching that of Teranex’s much larger platforms
at a fraction of the cost. Thanks to the performance and integration of the Realta HQV chip,
Teranex is now able to meet entry level price points while still reaching the high level of quality
Teranex customers have come to expect. Due to the lower component counts, the reliability is
remarkably high as well.
1RU configurations include up-conversion, down-conversion, standards conversion, HD cross
conversion at frame rates of 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97, 50 and 59.94. Standard features include closed
caption conversion, audio processing/shuffling and frame synchronization. Standard also is
FlexView™, Teranex’s unique aspect ratio selection that gracefully expands 4:3 material to fill
the 16:9 screen without the typical distortions. Optional is Animated Logo Insertion. The 1RU is
available in both single and dual channel configurations.
“I am pleased that we were able to meet the broadcasters’ needs by providing an intuitive user
interface in a compact 1RU chassis,” continued Deame. “This level of compactness and user
friendliness combined with Teranex’s leading video quality is an unbeatable combination.”
Teranex’s fully programmable, trillions-of-operations-per-second video processing systems have
been adopted by thousands of the most quality conscious broadcasters and post-production
houses worldwide.
