LOCAL TELEVISION STATIONS GO WIDESCREEN HD
USING TERANEX’S FLEXVIEW™
Orlando, FL. (April 25, 2006)—Teranex, a division of Silicon Optix and the leader in providing high-performance video-processing solutions to the broadcast and postproduction markets, announces that WKMG Channel 6, the no. 2 news station in Orlando , has transitioned its news broadcasts to widescreen HD using Teranex’s V220 Upconverter with FlexView™ 16:9 widescreen processing.
“Being a trendsetter in the industry, WKMG wanted to be the first news operation in Orlando to make the transition from standard definition (SD) to high definition (HD),” said Jed Deame , Vice President and General Manager of Teranex. “The challenge that television stations such as WKMG face is how to make the transition to HD news in a controlled, logical manner without disrupting too much of their existing operation.”
WKMG came up with an innovative approach to the HD news transition by implementing a phased plan. The first phase of the transition was to address the black bars on the sides of the upconverted news programming. To achieve this, they used the Teranex V220 FlexView™ Upconverter, which works with existing equipment and infrastructure to very naturally scale SD content to fill the entire 16:9 screen and get rid of those awful black bars.
“FlexView™ makes newscasters look like they are supposed to while progressively stretching the sides of the image to fill the entire screen,” said Ray Lego , Product Marketing Manager for Teranex. “In fact, with a clean SD input, the Teranex upconversion is so good that it is often difficult to distinguish it from native HD.”
Once the station’s studio production shifts to HD acquisition, WKMG will repurpose their Teranex FlexView™ system to convert their B-roll and ENG footage to seamlessly mix with their HD studio footage.
“Teranex’s V220 FlexView™ upconverter provides a way for broadcasters to quickly get on-air with HD widescreen and continues to add value to the news operation throughout all phases of the HD news transition,” continued Lego.
Recently, Silicon Optix and Teranex announced the Realta HQV® video processing engine, a powerful and fully programmable single-chip video processor that brings Teranex’s Video Computer platform to the home entertainment and professional large-area digital display markets. Realta HQV®, available in versions for both the consumer and professional markets, sets a new price/performance standard for the industry.
